There wasn’t any singular moment when he decided that this was his life’s calling. No chemical accident, no tragic death, no moment of realization. No origin story at all, really. Which sometimes niggled at him while he was on patrol. He thought it might mean that he wasn’t technically a superhero. Then again he was out here doing it, so that meant he was…right?
His costume was cobbled together from $20 in thrift store clothes; a corduroy blazer, a Halloween costume, bits of 80s teen fashions and a wet suit. It took him a few times to not end up looking like a drag queen on pills, but he finally got it.
To make sure he was out patrolling at much as possible, he’d dropped out of college, quit his day job and sold most of his stuff. Sure, he be might living off Treet and other potted meats these days and sleeping on an air mattress, but it was a noble sacrifice.
He hadn’t stopped any crime yet, but it was only a matter of time. He knew if he saved just one person it would all be worth it. And that’s what made him a hero.
Memphis Note
I came across a photo of someone running down Poplar in a superhero costume and I wondered why Memphis hasn’t had one of those home grown costumed crusaders that are popping up all over the country. Probably because we’re all too busy enjoying the city’s awesome food.
